Best AA batteries of 2021

Updated: Feb 28, 2021

We've dug deep and found the best AA batteries for you to use in any device.

Best Rechargeables

For almost all devices, rechargeable AAs are the way to go (see below for more details), and the Duracell Rechargeable AA is the best AA we have ever tested. With a great price and wide availability, it is hard to beat.

Duracell Rechargeable AA

At only $7 for a pack of 4, these Ikea's are a lot of battery for not a ladda money. They performed better overall than any rechargeable AA aside from the Duracells, yet they are some of the cheapest rechargeable AAs you can find - if you can find them that is. As they are IKEA branded batteries, they can be a little tough to find outside of the big box store.

Best High Tech

This AA is a whole new type of battery. With a USB port for charging, it wins huge points for convenience. It charges faster (2 hours or less), is easier to use, and provides a steady, higher voltage for your devices. The only downside is the price. At $26 for a 4 pack, these high tech AAs are more than twice the price of the Duracells.

Best Disposables

If you've got a few clocks, remote controllers, smoke detectors, or other low powered devices to power up, get the Energizer Ultimate Lithium. It is by far the longest-lasting AA we have ever tested.

If you need some batteries on hand, you can't go wrong with the Rayovac High Energy AAs for a great price and long-lasting power.

Disposable vs Rechargeable - which should I get?

Short answer: Rechargeable

For many devices, rechargeable AAs will last longer and provide better power than disposable batteries, and after a few uses they've usually saved you money. For that reason, we would recommend rechargeable AAs for almost all devices. However, the one area where disposable AAs can still really shine is in really low power devices, ones that last for months or even years on a single set of batteries. Devices like:

  • Clocks

  • Thermostats

  • Smart Home Devices

  • Smoke Detectors

  • Alarms

  • Remote Controls

  • Tape Players

  • Game Controllers (Xbox controllers)

  • Mouse and Keyboards

may be well suited for disposable AAs. It may also be nice to keep some disposable AAs on hand for power outages. In all other cases, you will be better off with rechargeable AAs. In many high-powered devices rechargeable AAs can last for 2x as long as disposable AAs. Don't believe us? Check out these 2 charts.

How We Tested

We subject every AA battery to multiple tests at 3 different levels.
